Hi
I came across your blog while looking for places to ride in WV. I live in Maryland and want to come over to ride in WV. I hear it has some stunning views and steep climbs! Can u provide some cue sheets or would u be interested in taking a out-of-towner for a ride?
Jay
Good blog, your writing is top notch, good job.
If you haven’t ever, come up to P’burgh some time for some riding. I have to put in a plug, check out http://bike-pgh.org/, events, see what we have going on!
I have recently relocated from Charleston, WV to Bridgeport, WV with my wife and daughter. I have ridden Valley Falls, Watters Smith, Big Bear Lake, and Coopers Rock. Do you know of any other single track trails that are close to Bridgeport? Do you ever ride at any of those places, it would be nice to have someone to ride with or do you know any people that ride in Bridgeport/Clarksburg area?
So where can I find the mountain bike trail that you have created? Also, I am thinking of building a trail in the woods behind my house/subdivision. Any pointers on easy ways of building the trail without using heavy machinery? I was thinking of just using a rake to start off with to remove the dead leaves and then riding over it several times to pack it down. Your thoughts?
I really like your blog, keep up the good work.
Steve, my trail is still a work in progress, since it is only accessible during Feb-April, then August-September, unless you like going through a couple inches of swamp/marsh.
I’m in the Buckhannon area, and do 99% of my riding in Buckhannon, Weston, Phillipi, and the outskirts of Elkins.
If you haven’t been to Thad’s Singletrack / Sports & Spokes Race Trail, they meet up every Tuesday in Phillipi @ 5:30 to do it. Absolutely worth doing.
The closest other trail I can think of is Valley Falls: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/47771661.
MTBR forums online has a whole section about trail advocacy, but the people are typically pretty EXTREME and follow national and IMBA guidelines, etc. Landmovers, groups of people biking into the woods with shovels and what not… You could find some kind of muse there, though.
I would start out removing debris, and putting it to the sides (Left or Right) of your intended trail. Use pieces of plastic construction ribbon; you know, the stuff that comes in orange, pink, yellow. and mark a tree every 20 feet or so. I suggest doing it like a slalom course and put the ribbon on opposite sides L,R,L,R, etc, to let you know where to stay in between. 1/2 mile a year is an impressive feat to do when you are attempting to find ideal terrain for the route. you never want to do long jaunts of more than 3 or 4% grade or you’ll lose interest fast! Figure out your trail the first x-months, and try riding it without logs in the way, etc. If this is enjoyable, then go through the labor of turning it into singletrack by raking and banking edges, etc. Just don’t initially invest a lot of time.
There is also a state park near by called Valley Falls. http://connect.garmin.com/activity/47771661 I hear there is good kayaking there too.
Email me a couple days ahead of time if you’re ever interested in coming down to Buckhannon to ride.
Andrew: Your blog masthead photo looks much like the Lehigh Gorge in Northeast Pennsylvania … an abandoned railroad grade and canal right of way that runs about 25 miles along the Lehigh River. Grab a map at …

… and come visit. Its also near the Appalachian Trail, if you care to walk you’re way up to us.
I liked you blogs layout theme too. Can you tell me its name on WordPress? Thanks.
Tony
Awesome site man!! Just discovered it!! I’ve seen your videos on YouTube though riding Thad’s singletrack in Philippi. My name’s Joe and I live in Clarksburg. Getting back into shape and looking for great places to ride, which there certainly are plenty of here in WV. Gonna have to visit your site more frequently!
I’ve been a bit slow to post anything lately, with life and, ahem, vacation getting in the way. I’m glad you enjoy what I have to offer~
If I ever catch up with you, remind me to give you a bumpersticker!
